Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
